IDEA #2 Nature's Palette

I went out one day looking to make soft painterly photos. In the past, I've used camera motion with some interesting effects, but this time it was a Spring day and all the tulips were in full bloom.
I somehow got the idea that if I put my camera right down inside a tulip (one with the sun streaming through it) and deliberately blurred the image, it might work.

The images have a very abstract, water-colour look and people might easily mistake them for paintings - but they are all photos.

Here's what I've said in my Artist Statement.

Nature’s Palette This series of painterly photographs was created by deliberately blurring close-up images of flowers.
 With the soft sunlit focus, the viewer can take pleasure in nature’s organic form and  strong and varied colour palette.
 Recognizable details in selected images suggest the floral subject matter.

New Ideas for a Show - IDEA #1: Leading Lines

Hello Friends,

I know that it's been ages since I've posted here but my friend Julie reminded me last night that I do have a few followers, so here I go again!!

I'm hoping that I can put together another gallery show for early 2017 and have some ideas about content and themes. As ever, so happy to receive your comments, critiques etc.. Best sent to me by email since I've never really got the comments section of the blog working...

One of my ideas is to put together a collection of landscapes from several trips. I was quite interested to notice how many of these photos use leading lines as a compositional  element and how pleasing I find these elements... so this is one idea.

Rather than re-post the images on the blog, I already have 10 images and an Artists' Statement on Flickr so you can click on the link BELOW and check them out there...  Here's one image to pique your interest... (granted, it's not a travel image... )

On the theme of "Creative:Red" please vote

Having fun with the 52 Week Photography Challenge. Upcoming week's theme is Creative: Red.

Number One was taken at the Olympic Village. I stripped out all the colour except the red and took the same image, rotated it and layered it on the original. Three layers in all.

Number Two was taken as I was walking home from the Olympic Village. Reflections on the paint of an old red car.

Creating with Photoshop

I took a Photoshop course last spring and haven't been doing much along those lines over the summer. Perhaps it's the inspiration of the fall colour, or maybe just that it's easier to hang around inside, but I'm trying to create with various layers, camera movement etc...

I think it looks quite painterly... what do you think?

Hello again, friends...

It has been quite a long time since I've posted on this blog. (Yikes, March!!)  I think that's because I had been using this forum to try and find an outlet or a path for my photography. And now I seem to have found it.

I now have a contract with Design Pics, a Canadian stock photography company that has partnerships with other stock companies all over the world. I can submit any images I want as long as they fall within their guidelines, and so far my track record is that they have accepted about a third of what I submit. Once on their sites anyone can buy the use of my images and I receive royalties.

It's a perfect way for me to share my work and helps to give my shooting more of a focus... no pun intended!!

Starting to get out there

YOU ARE HERE, a gallery photography show on and about the North Shore opens April 16th. It's part of the Capture Photography Festival and I have 4 pieces in the show.

Ab.... stract!!

Went shooting around Olympic Village yesterday with my old work buddy, Maggie. We were quickly chased away by the rain but we set ourselves the task of choosing our favourite five photos from the shoot. Here are mine -- all weirdly abstract.


First one includes a piece of red sculpture - made the other triangle b and w

This next is part of an ugly bird sculpture, but you can tell what kind of day it was!!

And this was shot across False Creek, looking at BC Place Stadium, but using my 'signature' deliberate camera movement. 

We wandered away from the Olympic Village and I found this piece of graffiti and shot through the branches of a tree. So sweet!!:)

Myanmar travels

Hello Friends,

Yes, it's been a while and Colin and I have truly been exploring. We had a wonderful trip to Myanmar, formerly Burma, arriving Christmas Day and staying for 3 weeks. This isn't really a travel blog, but suffice it to say that the weather, the sites, the countryside and particularly the people were all welcoming and delightful. And, of course, it was a photographer's paradise....

Painterly... or messy?

It was a beautiful sunny day yesterday and as I drove by, a red maple bush was just catching the sun. I got home but the bush kept calling my name, so I took my camera down the street and took some long exposures, moving my camera to deliberately blur parts of the photo. Tonight I tried layering a few of them - painterly, beautiful or just a big blob??? What do you think?

Hello Friends,

We have just returned from a month in rural Burgundy, France where (surprise) I took loads of photos. From 2000 + I've edited them down to around 70. Click on this link if you want to see the whole album of edited pics...     France photos

Colin doesn't really get my interest in cemeteries, (although he happily went looking for them with me)... well I don't fully understand it, either.... but I was really drawn to them. Every small village has its own graveyard, some of them very old, most of them set high on a hill. I think I like the dramatic settings. I guess it's nice to have something to pursue when doing other things on holiday.

I had intended to do lots of Photoshop while I was away, but alas friends, wine, food, hiking all got in the way. :) So that's next on the photo agenda.

Hope some of you get the cemetery thing...

Summer Musing

Here's some of the things I've been up to this summer...

I'm still working on learning more about compositing...combining elements from different images... 

Here are a few more early results... The 'flying carpet' was actually a learning exercise with someone else's images.. ... but the mind boggles with the possibilities... 

In the first image, the so-called 'super moon' taken on the Sunshine Coast, just didn't look big enough to me, so I made it larger, but then also had to increase the size of the reflection in the water. 

In this picture I added all the flying birds which I had photographed separately from the original shot. 

And finally in this exercise, I put in the square picture of the clock, but then distorted its shape. Notice how I also created the corresponding shadow and changed the flying carpet so it was darker underneath and lighter on top. The birds were also layered in independently. 

Still loving photographing the grandkids. And why wouldn't I? They are so cute!!

A whole new direction... Compositing

Don't ask!! I do love made up words, but this one seems to be designed for Photoshop. I'm reading and trying to teach myself more about how to layer different images in ways that make for a more interesting final product. Still lots more to learn, but I was happy with the way my first effort turned out.
